Well, Nevada actually.
In a testament to how low the health care discussions have fallen, Sue Lowden the GOP Senate candidate from Nevada (and according to recent polls, the frontrunner to Harry Reid) has proposed to change the current health care system to include localized barter. Yes, I’ll trade you 10 oxen for your farm hand kind of barter. In her words,
“Let’s change the system and talk about what the possibilities are. I’m telling you that this works. You know, before we all started having health care, the old days of our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor, they would say I’ll paint your house, they would, that’s the old days, what people would do to get health care from their doctor. Doctors are very sympathetic people. I’m not backing down from this”
So basically, Lowden wants to transform America into this:
But BETTER. An Oregon Trail where all you do is hunt for things (the best part) and can then trade them for medical cures, ensuring that you never die from snakebite in the Rockies when you were JUST SO SO CLOSE. Though I would love to ask Lowden her wagon go-to. Ford the river? Caulk the wagons and float? Given her barter mentality, you know she wouldn’t pay to take the ferry.
So, as an uninsured contractor, I support this overly-simplified ridiculous solution to a complicated problem. I have tons of crap in my apartment I could trade. And as far as I can tell, Wall Street can’t securitize a chicken (C-CDO?). Though I wonder what you would have to trade for an abortion? Awkward…
(Oh and sorry for this slight foray from local news. I just couldn’t resist. Thanks to Matt for the tip!)
